NATIONAL REPORT—The ground may be cold, but that hasn’t stopped hoteliers from putting shovels in the dirt. Here’s a look at a few recent groundbreakings:
Homewood Suites by Hilton in Largo, MD
Frontier Development & Hospitality Group has broken ground on a Homewood Suites by Hilton in Largo, MD. With 116 suites and 2,700 sq. ft. of flexible meeting space, Homewood Suites by Hilton Largo/Washington DC is slated for completion in late 2018. The new hotel will be owned by Frontier and managed by OTO Development, a Spartanburg SC-based Johnson Management company.
Frontier already has a presence in Largo—the DoubleTree by Hilton Largo/Washington DC, adjacent to the site of the new Homewood Suites.
“Since the day we indicated that we wanted to build ‘Downtown Largo’ and make it a hub for healthcare, the business community has responded by bringing new housing, restaurants, retail and hotels like this exciting new Homewood Suites to the area,” said County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, noting that Prince George’s County provided $1.5 million in Economic Development Incentive (EDI) Funds toward the $20-million extended-stay project, which is expected to create 41 new hospitality jobs.
WaterWalk in Richardson, TX
WaterWalk, Jack DeBoer’s fifth national brand, has broken ground on its third property in Richardson, TX. This is the second WaterWalk franchise property sponsored by MBC Partners, which opened its first WaterWalk franchise property in Centennial, CO, in September of this year.
The planned two-building, four-story, 153-room hybrid hotel and apartment concept has a projected opening date of November 2018. Law Company of Wichita, KS, is serving as general contractor and Woolpert of Dallas is serving as architect and civil engineer.
Three additional WaterWalk locations are under construction and seven construction starts are planned for the next eight months. The next two locations to open will be San Antonio, TX, in March 2018 and Las Colinas, TX, in May 2018.
Upon completion, WaterWalk Richardson guests will experience amenities not yet seen before at previous WaterWalk locations with the planned introduction of WaterWalk Prototype 4.0. New amenities will include an outdoor swimming pool with a lounge area, along with an expansive outdoor green space. WaterWalk Richardson will also be the first WaterWalk location to have balconies. The lobby’s open concept will invite guests and residents to linger and connect with one another at the coffee bar or over a televised sporting event on the 70-in. flat-screen television in the media room.
Home2 Suites/Tru by Hilton in Atlanta
Vision Hospitality Group Inc. recently broke ground on the dual-branded Home2 Suites and Tru by Hilton in Atlanta/Kennesaw Town Center. Projected to open in the spring of 2019, the property will be Vision’s first dual-branded hotel.
The 170-room hotel will have large communal spaces, mobile check-in, a social media wall and super-charging stations. Additional features include a state of the art Precor-equipped fitness facility, outdoor saltwater pool and 24-hour business center.
The hotel is located within walking distance of the Town Center at Cobb, and it is also near Kennesaw State University and the numerous businesses in the metro-Atlanta area.
The property is part of Vision’s pipeline of 16 premium-branded hotels in development. The hotel is the company’s second Tru by Hilton brand.
