AMSTERDAM—W Amsterdam’s second building, the Bank Building, has officially opened here. The building was, as the name suggests, formerly a bank that was built in 1906 and recently converted into the newest wing of the hotel.
The new space houses 66 guestrooms as well as spa facilities with treatment rooms, a swimming pool and saunas nestled inside the bank building’s former safes. Additional elements include The Duchess restaurant, tearoom and bar; X Bank, a hybrid store/art gallery; and FIT, a fitness center.
The interior design, from bedspreads to pillows to the AWAY Spa, is inspired by the building’s history, including minibars in each room shaped in the form of a bank vault. Among the design elements are corridor carpets that are in line with the ‘Amsterdam School’ architectural style showing a digital, pixelated version of old-fashioned oriental carpets; black and gold 3D-patterned bedspreads by Aleksandre Gaca, which are inspired by the bank vaults under the building; and pillows designed by Sabrina Bongiovanni to represent colorful versions of Amsterdam’s window sills.
This building joins the Exchange Building, which was used to house the former Telephone Exchange and opened as W Amsterdam in Oct. 2015.
