Just the facts on HVAC

NATIONAL REPORT—Being too hot or cold can make or break a guest’s experience. Hotel Business spoke to Heather Anderson, director of aftermarket and sales operations, Bosch Thermotechnology, for answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about HVAC.

How do I select the right HVAC system for my property? Identify your needs based on your location, budget and square footage of your building. Also, consider any unique needs your property may have, such as combating high humidity in tropical areas, or extreme temperatures specific to your region.

Calculating the size of the building you are planning to heat/cool is incredibly important. Estimating for a unit that is smaller, or even larger, than it is will cause your HVAC unit to function less efficiently, costing more money and limiting comfort. Including climate, insulation and number of occupants in this calculation will also allow you to reach the most accurate conclusion, although a qualified HVAC contractor will be able to assist.

How can I reduce my building’s energy costs? In addition to sizing your HVAC system appropriately, routine maintenance and inspection by an HVAC contractor is essential for preserving your HVAC units’ peak efficiency and also avoiding any preventable issues.

Identifying energy-efficient products will also keep costs in check. As technology advances, more and more efficient technology is becoming available for a wide array of applications.

How will I know if I need a new HVAC system? When your HVAC unit is no longer operating at the level of functionality you are used to, you are experiencing decreased comfort due to HVAC issues or if the system is aging and no longer meets your needs.

The lifespan of an HVAC system is dependent on an array of variables, such as the type of system, whether it has been regularly maintained, if it has been properly sized to the property, or if it has been exposed to corrosive or extreme climates, etc. HB
