In L.A., Oceanwide Plaza’s Fitness Program Gets Star Treatment

LOS ANGELES—Oceanwide Plaza, the first U.S. project for Oceanwide Holdings, is ready to make its mark through a collaboration with celebrity fitness trainer and nutritionist Harley Pasternak aimed at fostering a wellness lifestyle for residential owners and hotel guests.

This complex will offer the city’s first Park Hyatt hotel, providing 184 rooms and 34 suites and the first Park Hyatt-branded residences on the West Coast. The 164 half-floor and duplex residences and penthouses will range from one- to three-bedrooms, up to 8775 sq. ft., and offer a host of luxury amenities, including a resort-style cantilevered pool and fitness facilities.

For Pasternak, it’s his first collaboration with a luxury residential/hotel development where he will play a role in the design of the fitness and wellness features. An expansive two-acre park will play host to numerous fitness activities curated by Pasternak.

“Utilizing his background in outfitting luxury fitness spaces and his expertise in high-profile personal training, Pasternak will conceptualize and curate Oceanwide Plaza’s wellness-centric amenities, such as the Park Hyatt Los Angeles Residence’s private 23rd level amenity level and the vast two-acre private park located on Oceanwide Plaza’s eighth floor. Residents will be able to access this upon project completion in 2019,” said Thomas Feng, president and CEO, Oceanwide Plaza.

“Early discussions were focused on Oceanwide Plaza being a landmark development, one of the largest and most impactful real estate developments in Southern California, and something that will truly reshape Downtown Los Angeles,” said Pasternak. “Our conversations centered on creating fitness bases that would cater to the different types of residents that would be living at Oceanwide Plaza, while orienting the layout of equipment in a way that allows the users to view the Hollywood Hills, Downtown Los Angeles and even the Pacific Ocean. We also wanted to create spaces that served current fitness trends as well as future wellness trends, rather than the same traditional designs that you find in typical hotel spaces.”

With health and wellness as core principles within the local community, the Oceanwide Holdings team saw Pasternak’s well-rounded and holistic approach to wellness as an ideal fit.

“Specifically, Harley brings a well-rounded and holistic practice approach to wellness that invites all individuals to participate regardless of activity level. Whether our residents are fitness gurus themselves or just introducing wellness into their lifestyle, our goal was to provide approachability within luxury,” said Feng.

Pasternak’s wellness philosophy is about incorporating healthy choices into everyday life.

“There are 168 hours in the week. If you spend two, three, or even four hours a week in the gym, it’s the other 164 hours that you are not in the gym that are essential to feeling and looking great,” said Pasternak. “So while we are creating the most incredible fitness spaces, it’s important that guests and residents still eat well, get out and go for great walks throughout Los Angeles, hikes in the Hollywood Hills, bike rides along the beach, and get some natural vitamin D from our sunny weather.”

For the project’s design, Pasternak aims to achieve harmony within the spaces so guests get the most out of the wellness experience.

“I often collaborate with the interior designers and architects of the overall project to ensure that the design we do for the fitness spaces is congruent with the rest of the common areas of the building,” he said. “Everything from the colors of the frames, upholstery and accessories should be complimentary to the rest of the building.”
