NEW YORK—D. J. Rama, president of JHM Hotels, was honored here last night at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel by Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration with its 2013 Masters of Management in Hospitality Outstanding Alumnus award.
The 12th annual event, held in conjunction with the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show currently under way at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, was presented by Dennis Nessler, editor-at-large for HOTEL BUSINESS, title sponsor of the evening’s reception, together with the school’s dean, Michael Johnson.
“Every graduate of the School of Hotel Administration learns to lead the industry with knowledge, impact, ethics and self-awareness. Tonight’s honoree demonstrates each of these core principals every single day through his leadership of JHM Hotels, his service to the industry and his continued dedication to the school,” said Johnson, noting Rama completed the MMH program in 1996 and remains involved with the school via the Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship and as president of the Cornell Hotel Society of South Carolina.
Rama, whose family entered the hospitality industry in the 1970s, said the “award represents the realization of the American dream and the ability to reach higher levels through aspiration and education….At Cornell, my aim was to learn and absorb as much as I could, like a sponge, because I aspired to take our company, JHM Hotels, to the highest level.”
JHM Hotels currently has 42 hotels in its portfolio representing some 7,000 rooms with product from Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt and Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc.
