Four Hotels Set Roots in the South

NATIONAL REPORT—What’s in the works in the South? Hotel developments are shaping up in Atlanta, Houston and Austin, TX.

Kimpton to Add Second Hotel in Atlanta
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has plans for a second property in Atlanta, a 216-room adaptive-reuse hotel in the city’s Buckhead neighborhood. When it opens in late 2020, the Kimpton Buckhead, owned and developed by Atlanta developer Portman Holdings, will have a restaurant and bar, courtyard dining and drinking venue, private pool, rooftop lounge and approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space. The Kimpton Buckhead will join the Kimpton Overland Atlanta Airport in the city. IHG, Kimpton’s parent company, maintains its Americas headquarters in Atlanta, and the new Kimpton Buckhead marks expansion for the brand in this market.

The Burgess Hotel Brings Boutique to Atlanta
Hotel owners Burges & Freny Jokhi will open The Burgess Hotel in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood this fall. Apicii Hospitality Group will curate the food and beverage concepts. Designed by Duncan Miller Ullman (DMU), the $15-million renovation will have 102 guestrooms and seven suites. DMU also curated the open-concept lobby, restaurant, bar, meeting space and a fitness center. The outdoor pool will offer full-service food and beverage options. Hospitality Ventures Management Group will operate the hotel.

Kimpton Expands Presence in Texas
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has a new partnership within Houston’s cosmopolitan mixed-use development, Laneways, developed by lifestyle and real estate developer Caydon. Expanding Kimpton’s presence in Texas, the project will be the first boutique hotel in Midtown and is scheduled to open at the end of 2022. Located near downtown and in Houston’s Innovation Corridor, the hotel will provide access to the Galleria Mall, museum and theater districts, as well as Minute Maid Park and Reliant Stadium. The property will have 204 guestrooms, food and beverage options, a rooftop pool and bar and more than 14,000 sq. ft. of indoor-outdoor meeting space. The property will break ground in 2020.

Austin Proper Now Taking Reservations
Austin Proper Hotel & Residences has opened reservations for stays beginning on Jan. 15, 2020. The 244-room hotel in downtown Austin was designed by Kelly Wearstler, with design that is influenced by the area’s historic, articulate Craftsman-style homes and pays homage to Art Nouveau and arts and crafts motifs, joinery techniques, textures and materials. The hotel will also have dining concepts overseen by Larry McGuire and Tom Moorman of McGuire Moorman Hospitality. The property also has 99 luxury Proper-branded residences, two swimming pools, a spa, fitness center and nearly 10,000 sq. ft. of meeting space.
