Deadly Attack at Hotel in Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN—A 14-hour gun battle involving the Taliban at the Hotel Inter-Continental Kabul in Afghanistan’s capital left multiple people dead and wounded over the weekend, according to reports.

Various news outlets state the death toll has reached 22, but national news channel Tolo News is reporting as many as 43 people are dead. All six attackers have reportedly been killed and approximately 160 people were rescued after Afghan troops fought to regain control of the building.

Days before the attack, the U.S. State Department warned of exactly such an incident, noting that extremists were likely to target hotels in the Afghan capital, according to CNN. The property was previously under attack in 2011.

While the hotel in Kabul shares a similar name, the Hotel Inter-Continental Kabul is not part of InterContinental Hotels Group—and has not been since 1980.
