A Look Abroad: Openings, New-Builds in Italy, Argentina, More…

INTERNATIONAL REPORT—When in Rome, open a hotel. W Hotels Worldwide has set its sights on Italy; Meliá heads to South America; and there are more hotels opening or in the works abroad. Here’s a look at five of them:

W Rome

W Hotels Worldwide plans to open W Rome, marking its debut in Italy. Omnam Group will develop W Rome through a real estate fund managed by Kryalos SGR. The hotel is set across two historic buildings in the Via Veneto neighborhood and will connect guests to what’s new and next in Rome as of 2021.

Situated near the Spanish Steps and the boutiques of Via Condotti, the hotel will provide 159 guestrooms and suites, including an Extreme WOW suite—the brand’s take on the traditional presidential suite. Social spaces at W Rome include the W Living Room—the W brand’s spin on the hotel lobby—along with two restaurants and modern event space.

W Rome will span two adjacent 19th-century properties on Via Liguria. Originally intended for residential use, the buildings previously operated as a hotel, as well as offices for government ministries and private companies. The structures will be renovated and reimagined to refresh the historic elements, while infusing the W brand’s design philosophy.

Meliá Iguazu

Meliá Hotels & Resorts is headed to Iguazu National Park, a South American travel destination. The brand has signed and plans to open the Meliá Iguazu, the only hotel located in the heart of Iguazu National Park in Argentina.

Until recently, the property was managed by another international hotel group; the Meliá Iguazu will assume the hotel on Sept. 30, and in 2018, it will be completely renovated to update its facilities and attributes to the standards of the Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand.

It will have 169 guestrooms—including waterfall-view rooms—and a wide range of dining facilities, swimming pools, spa, gym, children’s play areas and meeting and event rooms. The hotel also has a visitor center focused on the enhancement of the natural environment of Iguazu, and access to the falls.

Itz’ana Resort & Residences

Itz’ana Resort & Residences in Placencia, Belize, is set to open on Dec. 15. The hotel’s concept strives to offer guests authentic experiences that sustain the region’s indigenous culture and natural environment, paired with high-design elements and experiences from a collection of artists, designers, archeologists and more.

“Itz’ana is unlike anything travelers have ever seen in the Caribbean,” said Colin Hannan, co-founder and managing director at Itz’ana Resort & Residences. “We’re committed to going above and beyond what’s expected of a beachfront resort, and we believe that giving back to the local community and environment while also offering an enhanced luxury experience will make Itz’ana unlike any other hotel.”

The resort will open with 16 deluxe suites and two beachfront suites. There will also be the Great House, a Hemingway-inspired gathering place for dining and programming in the heart of the property. An additional 32 resort suites, including two penthouses will come available through 2018, along with 46 waterfront residences.

Avani Les Berges Du Lac Tunis and Avani Gammarth Tunis Resort & Spa

Avani Hotels & Resorts, the upscale brand by Minor Hotels, is set to debut in North Africa with two new properties in Tunisia, in partnership with Groupe Chaabane.

Scheduled to open in the coming months, Avani Les Berges Du Lac Tunis Suites will be located in Les Berges du Lac II, a commercial, residential and diplomatic area in the Tunisian Capital. The 41-key property will offer serviced apartment accommodation options ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments and lofts, catering to corporate and extended-stay travelers. There will also be an all-day dining restaurant and a health club with a gym, two spa treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms, and an indoor swimming pool.

In addition and currently in its design phase, Avani Gammarth Tunis Resort & Spa is expected to open in 2021 and will offer 250 keys in a beachfront location. The new resort will form part of a larger development that will include retail and entertainment zones, offering 232 guestrooms and 18 private beach villas, five food & beverage outlets, meeting space including a ballroom, a health club and Avani Spa, in addition to two swimming pools and a kid’s club.
