Starwood Focuses on Upper-Upscale Segment

STAMFORD, CT–Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide's three upper-upscale brands, Westin, Sheraton and Le Meridien, posted a strong year of growth in 2012 in both the U.S. and international markets.

For Westin, a high point of the year was the debut of the brand's second flag in New York City. the Westin New York Grand Central. Sheraton debuted the Sheraton Macao Hotel, Cotai Central, the brand's largest hotel to open worldwide in 2012 and the largest hotel in Macao. Conversion activity increased during 2012 across all three brands in North and South America and included the opening of the Westin Lake Las Vegas, Le Meridien Arlington, Sheraton Vitoria in Brazil and Le Meridien in Mexico City.

The Westin New York Grand Central (pictured) was formerly The Helmsley New York. New owner Host Hotels & Resorts planned an extensive renovation of the 774-room property before changing flags. The hotel is located on East 42nd St., two blocks from both Grand Central Station, a major New York transportatio hub, and the headquarters of the United Nations. The hotel features 12,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space, a destination restaurant and fitness center.
