LOUISVILLE, KY—The Brown Hotel, here , completed its 12-month, $4-million renovation of all 293 guestrooms, marking one of the largest transformations in the iconic hotel's nearly 90-year existence.

The rooms were updated by designer Jeanne Jenkins of Secret Garden Interiors and included window and wall treatments, floor coverings, refinished wood pieces and hand-selected art. This redesign project marks one of the largest transformations in the iconic Louisville, Kentucky hotel’s nearly 90-year existence.

A “Kentucky State of Mind” carries throughout the hotel’s 16 newly renovated floors with images of pastorals, thoroughbreds, wildlife and Kentucky Derby scenes, all with a nod to the history of the building. More than 1,800 giclée art pieces in the English Renaissance-style corridors tell stories of Louisville’s history.

In an effort to make the project eco-friendly, many existing pieces were reused or sourced locally. Nearly 500 wooden headboards were reupholstered and refinished to renew the beauty of the 89-year-old hotel’s traditionally designed elements. Keeping with the grand and distinctive Georgian Revival architecture of the building and adding the refined touches of a high-end hotel were of importance in the refurbishing plan.

“My design vision for this project was the same that any lover of history would have,” said Jenkins. “I wanted to stay true to the original vision of the building’s creator.”

Bathrooms also received makeovers featuring granite-top vanities and Spanish marble accents. A European goose-down duvet and signature hand-woven throw adorn each of the hotel’s feather beds, Rooms vary in color scheme and include reds, onyx; tan velvets, blue embroidery and taupe damasks. Other amenities include flat-screen televisions, multi-line phones and wireless high-speed Internet access.

“Keeping the hotel in top shape is an ongoing mission for us,” said General Manager Brad Walker. “We’re always working to go above and beyond the expectations of our guests so that they come back year after year.”

Opened in 1923, The Brown Hotel holds an AAA Four-Diamond rating, is a member of Preferred Hotels and Resorts, as well as Historic Hotels of America
