DALLAS—La Quinta Inns & Suites reported strong growth in the second quarter, with the company adding 34 new franchises.
The brand accelerated its growth in the Eastern United States, with three new franchises in Virginia in the cities of Springfield, Manassas and Lynchburg, as well as properties in Capitol Heights, MD, and Albany, NY. In addition, ground was broken on several new hotels, including in Texas and North Dakota.
“We are delighted to join the La Quinta family,” Anis Kahn, the franchisee with properties in Springfield and Manassas, VA, said in a statement.
La Quinta also reported international growth with a hotel under construction in Medellin, Colombia, and development is under way on a hotel in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. According to the company, additional branded hotels are in the process of being finalized in those countries, as well as Nicaragua, Guatemala and Panama.
More than two-thirds of the franchises awarded in first-half of 2013 were for new construction properties.
In all, La Quinta opened eight hotels in the first half of the year and has since added two more in Boise, ID and Tampa, FL. In addition, ground was broken in Brooklyn, NY, for a hotel.
“Our second-quarter growth data exceeded expectations and demonstrates the continued strength of the La Quinta brand in key U.S. markets and internationally,” Rajiv Trivedi, La Quinta’s EVP/chief development officer, said in a statement. "We look forward to updating the industry on our continuing growth in the second half of 2013.”
"We are proud to share these results," added Wayne Goldberg, La Quinta’s president/CEO, noting the company is continuing to "grow fast" and "grow smart," while maintaining its focus on "delivering excellence for our franchise partners, our associates and, above all, for our guests.”
La Quinta now has more than 800 hotels across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

When you hear all the lodging industry projections for the months and years to come, much of the robust growth is forecast to be the result of the expected influx of travelers from China. In what could only be seen as good news for the industry, that expectation moved a little closer to reality when President Obama signed a visa waiver extension for Chinese travelers earlier this month.
