MIAMI—IHG has signed two new Holiday Inn Express hotels in Managua, Nicaragua and Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Both properties are slated to open in 2014. Managed by Latin American Hospitality Management S.A., a subsidiary of Grupo AGRISAL, the hotels will be franchised by an affiliate of IHG.
“Managua and Tegucigalpa are excellent examples of emerging cities that support the growth of the Holiday Inn brand family in the region,” Joel Eisemann, chief development officer, IHG, the Americas, said in a statement. “Both cities are generating great demand for internationally branded hotels, and we are excited to expand the Holiday Inn Express brand in these markets."
Together, the two Holiday Inn Express hotels will add 220 rooms to IHG’s existing Holiday Inn brand family in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, which currently includes 18 Holiday Inn Express hotels and 24 Holiday Inn hotels.
Current IHG-branded hotels represented in Nicaragua include the Real InterContinental Hotel Metrocentro Managua, Crowne Plaza Hotel Managua and Holiday Inn Hotel Managua. In Honduras, the IHG branded hotels portfolio includes the Real InterContinental Hotel Tegucigalpa, the Real InterContinental Hotel San Pedro Sula, the Crowne Plaza Hotel San Pedro Sula and the Holiday Inn Express Hotel San Pedro Sula.
“Bringing more hotel rooms to these vibrant cities will promote tourism, business and corporate growth,” Alvaro Diago, COO, Latin America and Caribbean at IHG, said in a statement. "IHG is very pleased to be part of these fast growing cities’ developments alongside such a significant partner like Grupo Agrisal, and to work together to increase IHG’s longevity in the region.”
Boasting a modern design, the 110-room Holiday Inn Express Hotel Managua will be situated in an upscale district of Nicaragua’s capital--close to shops, corporate buildings and restaurants. This 7-story, new build will also feature a fitness center, outdoor swimming pool and private parking area.
Sharing similar characteristics, the 110-room, 7-story Holiday Inn Express Hotel Tegucigalpa will be located in one of the Honduran capital city’s most prestigious neighborhoods--just a few blocks away from the Presidential Palace. The hotel is also near various headquarters for national and multinational corporations, shopping centers and government entities.

When you hear all the lodging industry projections for the months and years to come, much of the robust growth is forecast to be the result of the expected influx of travelers from China. In what could only be seen as good news for the industry, that expectation moved a little closer to reality when President Obama signed a visa waiver extension for Chinese travelers earlier this month.
