NEW YORK—Castro Convertibles has debuted the Castro Convertible Ottoman at the International Hotel Motel & Restaurant Show here. “For the lodging industry, this is the ultimate product because it’s so multifunctional,” said Bernadette Castro, CEO of Castro Convertibles. “Right now, you’re dealing with rollaway beds. With the price per square foot to build these places, or to convert every little inch of square footage to revenue generating, having to store rollaway beds is the last thing you want to do. This product is in the room, so it takes the place of a foot ottoman or a chair, or it’s a standalone ottoman for room service trays, for luggage, for seating. You don’t store it.”
Castro also noted that the ottoman is on wheels and fits between door jambs, so hotels can relocate the product between rooms. “You don’t have to lift it. A housekeeper can push it around.”
The ottoman comes in two sizes—33 in. and 39 in.—and has a 5 in. thick mattress and a wooden slat mechanism, designed for user comfort. “The wood slat is actually between the steel and the mattress,” said Castro. Everyone has this fear with a sofa bed that there’s got to be a bar somewhere. You won’t feel anything because of the wood slat.”
The ottoman comes with a choice of slipcovers or buyers can opt to make their own.

The most recent NYU Conference, earlier this month proved, once and for all, that the lodging industry has finally turned the corner and happy days are, indeed, here again. While the economists and pundits all provided plenty of anecdotal evidence to bear that out in terms of supply and demand ratios, RevPAR projections, asset values and all the other metrics, that’s not what has me convinced.
