ATLANTA–The 25th Annual Hunter Hotel Investment Conference opened here with a panel of industry leaders that defended the growth of new hotel brands.

Asked if the recent proliferation of new brands was harming the industry, Jim Anhut, IHG's SVP for brand management for The Americas, responded that existing brands have been slow to respond to how their target guests live today. Customers have already segmented the industry in their minds and are often looking for new alternatives, he said.

Noted Hilton Worldwide SVP for development Bill Fortier: Brands that fade away do so because they've lost relevance, opening the door for new brands to take their place.

Attendees at the conference, which is being held at the Atlanta Marriott Margquis, came from 36 U.S. states and four countries, noted conference co-chair Bob Hunter
