SAN FRANCISCO—SB Architects has completed the design for the first phase of Waterfront City, a new mixed-use community in Beirut. The construction commenced this month. This was the first phase of a multi-phased development, which will include further retail development, residences and a hotel, as well as a shopping mall and commercial office space.

SB Architects won an international design competition to plan and design the property, which encompasses 48 acres.

Waterfront City is a joint venture between Ste Joseph G. Khoury et Fils Holding and Majid Al Futtaim.

SB Architects’ design for Waterfront City mixes modern architectural and design elements with traditional patterning and materials.

The first phase will include 270 residences rising eight stories high. Promenade Residences can be accessed from semi-private elevators. Upper-level penthouses will have rooftop terraces, and the first-floor residences will open onto terraces with private pools and pool houses. The project features the warm hues of limestone block, wood louvers and other natural materials.

SB Architects will continue work on the remaining phases. Waterfront City will feature more than 5,000 new residences, in addition to commercial and retail districts.
