SANTA FE, NM—La Fonda on the Plaza completed an extensive eight-month room renovation project, comprising the most significant upgrades to its guestrooms and suites since 1929, according to the hotel's management.
The newly renovated rooms and corridors feature craftsmanship and artwork that reflect La Fonda’s storied past and were designed by Santa Fe firm Barbara Felix Architecture + Design.
Demonstrating the hotel’s commitment to authenticity and the community, La Fonda relied heavily on local craftsmen for the renovation project.
“After years of planning and months of hard work, La Fonda’s renovation project has brought welcome modern touches to this Santa Fe landmark,” stated hotel chairwoman Jennifer Kimball. “We are thrilled with the results and excited to welcome a new generation of travelers to visit the new La Fonda.”
With the exception of previously refurbished Terrace suites, all guestrooms and suites received aesthetic and infrastructure upgrades. La Fonda’s team conducted extensive research into the cultural and artistic elements of original designer Mary Jane Elizabeth Colter’s style, and the important details were carried into the new La Fonda. These can be seen in the rooms’ new lighting, floor coverings and handcrafted furnishings. The result is a modernization of the historic property without compromising its authenticity and unique character, according to the management. Reflecting La Fonda’s support of the local art community, all rooms display original artwork owned by the hotel.
La Fonda’s rooftop Bell Tower Bar also received upgrades, expanding the seating area by 500 sq. ft. The open-air outdoor bar also now has its first kitchen, allowing the Bell Tower to serve lunch and light fare. Created by La Fonda Executive Chef Lane Warner, the new menu features casual favorites infused with the flavors of Santa Fe.
Formerly a Harvey Hotel, La Fonda offers a total of 179 guestrooms and suites, including 14 luxury rooms built around a rooftop terrace with views of Santa Fe and the St. Francis Cathedral Basilica. It offers more than 20,347 sq. ft. of event space and its signature restaurant, La Plazuela, was renovated in 2009 and occupies the hotel’s original 1920s open-air courtyard.
Opened in 1922, La Fonda on the Plaza sits at the terminus of the Santa Fe Trail and is the only hotel on the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Reports of an inn at this location date back to the 1600s.
La Fonda is a member of the National Trust's Historic Hotels of America.
