NEW YORK— SIXTY Hotels plans to add the Nautilus South Beach to its collection, its first hotel in Miami Beach. Slated to open in the fourth quarter of this year, the hotel will join properties in New York and Los Angeles.
Originally built as the Nautilus Hotel, the 251-room, oceanfront property is located in the heart of Miami's art deco district at 1825 Collins Ave. Designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, the Nautilus South Beach will be renovated with homage to its original spirit, but will aim to emulate a luxury beach house with public spaces, rooms and suites that will have an international and residential feel, according to the company. Updates include a new restaurant, lobby lounge, extensive events and meeting room space, a pool bar, and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
The 251 guestrooms, including 29 premium suites and two signature penthouses, will feature a soothing color palette. All rooms offer custom, 400 thread-count SFERRA linens, gourmet minibars and amenities by REN.
The lobby will be outfitted with a beach vibe with nautical accents and tufted grey linen sofas. Other design elements include metallic orange leather chairs at the concierge desk and the use of materials throughout the lobby area such as grey concrete, glove leather, various stones and linen chairs and sofas reminiscent of those found in global beachfront estates.
In collaboration with Jeffrey Chodorow's China Grill Management and internationally renowned chefs Claude Troisgros and his son Thomas, the hotel will also reintroduce the Blue Door to the Miami dining scene, offering French technique with Brazilian ingredients. The newly re-imagined restaurant and bar will accommodate 210 seats including an alfresco dining patio. Nautilus South Beach will also feature over 16,500 square-feet of indoor and outdoor event space.
The Nautilus South Beach, a SIXTY Hotel, is being developed by InSite Group, a boutique real estate development and investment firm, which owns the hotel in a joint venture with Quadrum, a global private equity investment and advisory group focusing on real estate and asset-backed investment strategies. The project is designed by Florida-based designer, Caroline Giraud-Sukornyk of CG Design and architecture is by Arquitectonica.

When you hear all the lodging industry projections for the months and years to come, much of the robust growth is forecast to be the result of the expected influx of travelers from China. In what could only be seen as good news for the industry, that expectation moved a little closer to reality when President Obama signed a visa waiver extension for Chinese travelers earlier this month.
