Choice Founder, Stewart Bainum Sr., Dies at 94

SILVER SPRING, MD—Stewart Bainum Sr., founder of Choice Hotels International and former longtime president and CEO of the company, has died. He was 94.
Bainum, who opened his first hotel here in 1957 and served as chairman and CEO of Choice from 1968 to 1987, died following complications from pneumonia. Bainum also served as CEO of ManorCare Health Services and Vitalink Pharmacy Services.
Steve Joyce, president and CEO, Choice Hotels International, stated, “I am honored to lead Choice Hotels and honor Stewart’s legacy. He will be missed by the many lives he touched.”
Bainum is survived by his wife of 72 years, Jane Goyne Bainum of Chevy Chase, MD, as well as their four children and 10 grandchildren.
